Design cannot be done against empty space. A page of lorem needs enough text in it to show how headings wrap, how paragraphs behave, and whether the layout holds when content is longer than expected. Placeholder text is how you fill a design before the real words exist.

What makes it work as filler

The reason lorem ipsum has survived since the printing era is that it behaves like English without being English. The words have realistic lengths, including some short ones, and the paragraphs have an irregular texture rather than a uniform block. That irregularity matters: uniform filler hides layout problems that real content immediately exposes.

It also contains no meaning, so nobody reading a draft mistakes it for a decision. It is deliberately neutral text.

How much to generate

Enough to fill the layout at the length the real content will actually be, not the length you hope it will be. Designing a page around two short paragraphs and then receiving a long article is the single most common way a design turns out to be wrong, and the fault lies in the placeholder rather than the layout.

Generating more than you need costs nothing. If a heading is set at a large size, write a heading-length string rather than assuming the current text represents it.

Two things to check while it is still placeholder

Look at the layout with the text in place, particularly the things that only appear at length: whether a sidebar collapses sensibly, whether a card grows to fit a two-line title, whether the navigation wraps.

Then remove it. Placeholder text reaching a live page is a genuine search problem rather than a cosmetic one, because a page of meaningless text tells a crawler the page has no content, and it is embarrassing if a visitor sees it.

Placeholder that resembles real content

Standard lorem works, but it has one weakness that matters for layout: the words are Latin, so the letter shapes and word lengths do not match your real text. A heading set in a display face will wrap differently when the actual heading arrives, particularly when the real content contains long words, capitalised acronyms or a number.

Where that matters, it is better to paste real wording of the right length. A heading written at roughly the character count the final heading will occupy reveals wrapping far more accurately than any generated string. This is why experienced designers often ignore placeholder altogether once copy exists, even if it is not final.

It is also worth varying the shape of the content rather than filling everything with the same paragraph. A page of medium-length paragraphs looks very different from one with a short paragraph, a long one and a single line, and the second is closer to real writing. If you can spare ten minutes, copy a few paragraphs from an article you have written and use those instead.

One more habit worth keeping: replace the placeholder the moment real copy exists. Leaving it in place over a long period is how a staging page ends up indexed.

If you need much larger volumes of filler, generating a bigger block once and copying from it is faster than repeatedly pressing the button.
